See Why Nigerian Mum Based In The US Lost Children’s Custody To Government

A US-based Nigerian victim of domestic abuse has lost custody of her children after her daughter reported that she hit her to the cops.

Sharing her plight via Humans of New York Instagram page, the single mum cried out for help, saying the US Government is ‘oppressing’ her as the latter has refused to hand over her children.

She wrote:

”I was pregnant the first time he hit me. I found another woman in his house. And when I asked who she was, he got violent. He told me: ‘You are not my mother. You have no right to ask me about this.’ Then he hit me. And there was nothing I could do.

That sort of behavior is accepted in Nigeria. Nobody is going to call it ‘domestic violence.’ If you tell the police, they will tell you to listen to your husband. But things are different in America.

So I left my husband six months after we arrived. I entered a domestic violence shelter. I became a single mother. And I was doing fine. I was working as a security guard and my children were not suffering. But then one day my daughter called the police and told them that I hit her.

But that is my right. A mother has the right to discipline her children. They were disobeying me. But the government took my children away and now they won’t give them back. They are oppressing me with their power.”

  • But you know the country where you’re living-in. You should tread with caution when applying discipline. Those folks ain’t smiling and it’s gonna take you a long time to get those kids back.

  • Hmmm madam I’m happy you’ve realized you are not in Nigeria. Over there you don’t beat a child. You deny them some privileges as a mode of discipline. I just hope you get them back. When you are in Rome you behave like the romans. They won’t give you back because you are claiming rights and not realizing your mistake.

  • First, who told you domestic violence is acceptable in Nigeria? it is a global phenomenon.well… like you said, that’s America. so deal with it.
