Mother of 7 Commits Suicide After Making this Discovery

A mother of 7 children has taken her own life just weeks making the discovery that she was pregnant again. Carla Murtagh, 34, from Birmingham, had booked an appointment to have an abortion, but later changed her mind and decided to keep the baby. Reports also state that Carla was suffering from chronic depression. 9 days after deciding she wanted to keep the baby, she went upstairs asking to be left alone. Hours later, her body was found hanging from a rope.

Mirror UK reports that she was rushed to Heartlands Hospital after her husband, Mathew, found her. Doctors moved to perform an emergency caesarian on the mom who was 25 weeks pregnant at the time, but the baby was stillborn.

Mathew told reporters that all 7 of their children were aged between 15 years and 14 months. They were however terrified to find that she was pregnant again, considering her illness and the size of their family, that was why she insisted she wanted an abortion.

“We were shocked because it wasn’t planned,” said husband Matthew. “She considered having an abortion because we already had so many children. She was upset, and we were discussing how we were going to have another baby.” Mathew said.

Matthew described that Carla had woken up in a “bad mood”, but seemed fine. She started to cook a meal as the family was celebrating a birthday that day. Mathew said he went to buy a birthday cake from the supermarket with two of his children. When they returned, he said Carla had gone upstairs and was acting quiet.

After a  post-mortem examination was carried out on her body, it was revealed that she had alcohol, cannabis and antidepressant fluoxetine in her blood, a combination that could result in Central Nervous System Depression.

Coroner Louise Hunt, who spoke to newsmen had this to say.

“This is a tragedy, and for the family I am so very sorry. It is very sad and you have had to sit through some difficult evidence. In time I hope you can remember the Carla you all loved and not in the sad way that she lost her life.”
