3-Years After, Brad Pitt Spills On His Challenges And Recovery Journey Following Messy Divorce From Angelina Jolie

Hollywood actor, Brad Pitt has revealed some intimate details about his life in a New York Times profile published on Wednesday, including the catalyst that caused him to get sober.

Following his high-profile 2016 divorce from famous American actress, filmmaker and humanitarian, Angelina Jolie, his partner of 11 years, the 55-year-old actor and single dad delved into alcoholism, he said in the profile.

Speaking about his sobriety and what he’s learned from spending a year and a half in an all-male ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ group, the award winning actor looked back on his decision to give up drinking saying;

“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privilege.”

Pitt started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where he said he forged a close relationship with the recovery group of men with whom he shared the most confidential parts of his life. According to him, he was surprised that the people in the rehabilitation group didn’t pass his story to news tabloids. He shared further:

“You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself. It was actually really freeing just to expose the ugly sides of yourself and there’s great value in that.”

Pitt acknowledged that he used some of his own personal struggles for his role of Roy McBride in James Gray’s upcoming film “Ad Astra.” Pitt signed onto the role just months after Jolie’s divorce filing. He added:

“I had family stuff going on. We’ll leave it at that. The fact is, we all carry pain, grief and loss. We spend most of our time hiding it, but it’s there, it’s in you. So you open up those boxes.”

“He definitely used the stimuli from his life. Now, I didn’t get personal with him about it at all — I don’t think it’s my business, or even my job — but he investigated the essence of the character through himself.”

You will recall that in Jolie’s original divorce filing, she cited “irreconcilable differences” and requested sole physical custody of their kids, allowing Pitt visitation rights.

In Pitt’s response to the filing, he asked a judge to grant joint physical custody of Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 16, Pax Jolie-Pitt, 13, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, 12, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, 11, and twins Knox Jolie-Pitt and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, 9.
