Cheering news from Anambra state as 15 year old former child bride, Miss Chikwendu, whose story made news in January this year, has completed her rehabilitation and is set to take on her dreams. Chikwendu’s forced marriage sparked widespread condemnation online and offline after a Facebook user shared her story. The former child bride was forced by her family to marry an older man named Izuchukwu Igwilo, due partly to poverty and to the fact that she had a child from another relationship and her family feared her future didn’t seem bright thereafter. Following the public outcry, the state Commissioner For Women and Children affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, intervened and Chikwendu was retrieved from the Igwilos. She was rehabilitated, trained in tailoring and empowered with other 100 Ndi Anambra by Industrial Training Fund, ITF, and resumed school, yesterday October 8.
Concluding the process of healing and rehabilitation, Chinwendu was today accompanied by the Honorable Commissioner, her elderly father and some staff of the ministry of women and children affairs to the school where she will continue with her education.
