Kaduna Assembly Approves Stern Law To Deal With Rapists

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved a stern law to deal with rapists in the state. The Assembly gave the approval following the passage of a bill to amend the Kaduna state penal court law, 2017, by the lawmakers on Thursday, September 10.

They approved castration as punishment for anyone convicted of rape in the state. The assembly announced the approval on its Twitter handle but deleted the tweet afterward.

the assembly’s deleted tweet read.

However, the majority leader of the assembly also tweeted about the development.

“A bill to amend the Kaduna State Penal Court Law No.5 of 2017 has yesterday 09/09/2020 been pass into Law by @Kadlegislature. The Bill Recommend total Castration for Rapist in the State,”

the tweet read.

In July this year, the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said the justice system of the state will no longer grant bail to rapists. He disclosed this when a group of women, advocating for justice for rape victims, staged a peaceful rally at the government house in Kaduna. According to Governor El-Rufai,

“In addition to life imprisonment or 21 years’ imprisonment, anyone convicted of rape will have his organ surgically removed so that even after he finishes his term, he will not be able to rape anyone again,”

the governor had said.

So long as the tool exists, there is the likelihood that he may go back to do it again. Most of the perpetrators are young people, so even after 21 years, they can come back and continue.”
