Mercy Aigbe Addresses African Parents As She Spills On Her Parenting Mistakes

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Mercy Aigbe is like every African mom who makes parenting mistakes.
While giving an emotional speech during the premiere of My Mother Is A Witch, the movie star recounted how her daughter, Michelle, was traumatised for years for the harsh upbringing she gave her.
According to her, she hit a bucket on her head when she was younger, an action she now regrets.
The mother of two said she apologised to her daughter as she admonished African parents to start having conversations with their kids.
She noted how there are a lot of damaged adults in society who have not healed from their childhood trauma.

In her words:
“For years, I was a single mom to my daughter, Michelle and just 3 days ago I had to send an apology text to her for the harsh upbringing I gave her.
A few years ago, I sent my daughter to Canada for school. One day, I called her several times and she didn’t pick up. I was worried, and I had to call her friend.
When she eventually picked, she said ‘mummy, I am traumatised, I remember how you hit a bucket on my head when I was young’.
I was like Are you mad? I later apologised to her for the harsh upbringing. It is time parents start having conversations with their kids.
We have a lot of damaged adults in society who have not healed from their childhood trauma. African parents are too proud to apologise.”

During Michelle’s graduation in 2023, Aigbe reflected on her trials as a single mother. She recounted how she couldn’t accompany her daughter to school because she couldn’t afford tickets for two, as she was still struggling.
Mercy added that she almost gave up at some point and wanted to send her daughter back home to Nigeria to complete her education, but God came through for her.
