The shocking ordeal unfolded after Lelys Leyva, 17, began arguing with her boyfriend and suddenly leaned out the backseat window of the Chevy Suburban as it cruised down Cooper St. near Park Row Dr. in Arlington early Saturday, KTVT-TV reported.
Three people, including her boyfriend, desperately tried to yank her back inside the SUV. “They tried to stop her, they tried to pull her back,” the teen’s best friend, Danielle Landtrip, told the local CBS affiliate.
But Leyva — who was going to a nearby apartment with the group after they spent a night drinking at a Dallas nightclub — tumbled from the window and hit her head before part of her body was run over by the back wheels of the SUV about 2:45 a.m., police said.
The driver quickly pulled over and told all three remaining passengers to get out before peeling away from the scene, police said.
Emergency workers arrived a short time later, but Leyva — a student at Arlington High School — could not be saved. Police found the driver, who was not identified, and took the person into custody. The driver was cooperating with investigators, the news station reported.
Investigators were still trying to determine exactly what led up to Leyva’s tragic fall, but said alcohol was likely a factor. Police said the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission will be looking into how the underage group was served booze.
The teen’s mother, Maria Leyva, told Telemundo that each person inside the SUV has told a different story about what happened.
“I want my girl,” she told the station in Spanish, according to KXAS-TV. “I know it’s not going to be possible, but I want peace in my heart knowing how she left. Those responsible must pay with all the weight of the law.”
