Crying Competition Held For Babies In Japan

In Japan, some parents believe Sumo wrestlers can help their children cry out a wish to grow up with good health.

This is done in a ceremony that dates as far back as 400 years ago. Held in shrines throughout the nation, Sumo wrestlers are seen holding the screaming babies up in a crying contest – with the children’s parents watching on with delight. In other cities, some babies are raced against each other to see who will cry first. The first crier loses.

More than 100 sobbing tots took part in the centuries old ritual, which is believed by many to bring the infants good health.
