Son Dies While Shielding Mum From Gunman In Chicago

A 21-year-old, James Jones, reportedly lost his life while shielding his mum, Alicia Jones, from a spray of bullets outside their Chicago home.

“He used his body to shield her, to save her,” the mum’s sister, Dietra Luckett, told the Chicago Tribune of her nephew’s deed.

He had been home at the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue while out on parole after serving a prison sentence for attempted burglary, the Sun-Times reported.

A gunman approached the home and opened fire, giving Jones only enough time to protect his mother.

The aunt blamed his death on gang violence.

He is the third child Jones has lost to Chicago violence since 1994 when her son, Curtis, was killed by a Molotov cocktail chucked through a window, the Tribune reported citing its archives.

Her daughter, Antoinette Means, a 19-year-old high school valedictorian, was murdered in 2006 when a gunman robbed a KFC where she worked.

The mother was hospitalized in critical condition and has since been asking for her son, not realizing he died protecting her, Luckett said.

The gunman is yet to be identified.
