‘All I can say is that I love her with all my heart’ Man Pleads After Brutal Machete Attack on Wife

Juliet Akinyi, a 27-year-old Kenyan woman lying in a hospital bed at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after a machete attack by her husband last weekend, has said she has forgiven him and may be open to reconciliation after her husband’s pleas.

According to Nairobi News, narrating what led to the brutal attack, Juliet said,

“I met my husband Robert Mwanda for a drink at a club in Daraja Mbili area in Kisii town.

He had travelled to Kisii earlier from his Awendo base. When I arrived, he was in a jovial mood. As we enjoyed drinks at the club, nothing about him seemed to suggest that he would later turn violent.

I saw the machete and knife but when I asked him about them, he told me that they were for normal duties at our rural Ndhiwa home. I was satisfied with his answer.”

She added that they lodged in one of the rooms at the club around 11:30pm that night in high spirits, however, her husband woke her up around 2:30 a.m and turned violent. She continued,

“He accused me of using the funeral of a colleague’s mother as an excuse for infidelity. All my attempts to plead my innocence fell on deaf ears as he pulled the machete from the shopping bags and viciously slashed me on the shoulder.”

Her husband allegedly fled afterwards and attempted suicide by swallowing a pesticide. He reportedly slit his throat subsequently and threw himself before an oncoming lorry. The driver, however, managed to avoid any eventuality and rushed him to the hospital where he is now in protective police custody.

His wife, whom doctors revealed will need another three to four weeks to recover, claimed her husband has never been violent within the one year they have been married.

Meanwhile, her husband, who is reportedly chained to his hospital bed and expected to be discharged in a week, has said he still loves her and is willing to discuss terms of reconciliation with her family. He said,

“Only God knows what happened between us. All I can say is that I love her with all my heart despite this unfortunate incident. I will not say anything else.”
