‘I Am Not Intimidated By Any Man’ – Lagos Politician Mojisola Ojora Lawal Speaks on Gender Equality in Nigerian Politics
The Nigerian Political scene is dominated mainly by the male populace, with the female folk, very much at the back end of the game. There is one senator, who doesn’t let gender inequality define her roles and her job. She is Mojisola Ojora Lawal, the daughter of the late Ojora of Ijora and also represents Apapa Constituency I seat in the Lagos House of Assembly.
Speaking with the Punch, in an exclusive interview, she gives a rare insight into life as a woman in the Nigerian political arena:
“As a woman coming into politics, you should be ready for all sorts of things. I am actually determined. Besides, my coming into the Lagos House of Assembly is not something that I just decided one morning, I had actually been eyeing some offices in order to give back to my community and the people but most importantly, letting the voice of my people to be heard. I am not intimidated by anybody even men.”
Shedding light on how venturing into politics has affected her marital life, she says that her husband is her biggest support and motivation, as he takes time off work to support her through her campaign, and was always beside her when she went campaigning:
“The most important thing is for God to give a person his/her true husband or wife. I have mine. He understands everything. If you look at my campaign albums, you would notice that my husband was with me. He actually took time off work to be with me all through that period and he programmed his annual leave to coincide with my campaign period. We were always on the road together and I have all the support I need from him.”
