Ekiti State Police Command has been ordered by a court to pay the sum of N20 million to a woman, Sola Aregbesola, who was brutalised by officers of the command while she was in their custody.
Punch reports that a total sum of N20million damages has been awarded against the police command for illegally detaining and brutalising 51-year-old Aregbesola by a High Court sitting in Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti state.
Ruling over the case of police brutality today at the court, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, also awarded another N250,000 cost against the police to cover the medical expenses of the woman as a result of the unlawful detention and beating she suffered.
It was also gathered that the police arrested the woman on the orders of her husband’s alleged mistress. The alleged mistress had also attacked her with hot soup, inflicting serious bodily injuries on her and causing deformation to her person.
The mother of five was detained for 72 hours at Ilawe Police Station in October 2016. She said that she was almost stripped naked during when she was in custody, adding that she lost the use of one eye as a result of the brutality.
She added that she was tortured, chained and beaten by the officers.
