Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, whose proposed family law for Kano has been a subject of debate in public domain recently, has explained the basis for establishing the law.
He made this known during a speech in Kano when Mohammed Malick Fall, the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) representative in Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit at his palace, DailyTrust gathered.
According to him, parents having kids without knowledge of parental responsibilities is accountable for numerous social problems the society is facing today. He said about 3 million children in Kano are out of school due to ignorance of their parents on their responsibility to take care of their children’s educational upbringing.
He advised parents to change their thoughts and perceptions about the education of their children especially the girl child saying it is the only way the society could achieve the desired change.

“For you to have kids you must make sure that the responsibility of their education, health, and general up-bringing both morally and otherwise are part and parcel of what a parent should do.”“It is not only giving birth to the child that matters, but how to take your responsibility as a parent to bring-up that child to grow and be a benefit to the society in general. If people are aware of this they will not even have many kids that they know they cannot take care of,” Sanusi said.
In addition, Sanusi spoke about the spate of street hawking in Kano even among children of school going age saying if the parents had risen to their responsibilities the issue would have reduced.
He affirmed that change is always difficult in any society especially when it touches on their old tradition.
In spite of all this, the UNICEF’ representative, commended the Emir over his visionary leadership and advocacy on issues relating to children especially girl-child education. He asked for the prayer and support of the royal father to enable him succeed as the country’s UNICEF representative.
