WATCH: Tonto Dikeh, Mercy Aigbe & Olori Ogunwusi Speak Up Against Domestic Violence

Following the increasing cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse against women across the continent, some notable personalities and famous celebrities took it upon themselves to stand up against the menace.

During the #1in3Africa walk against domestic violence, some celebrities like Mercy Aigbe, Tonto Dike, who have been victims of domestic violence, stood up in solidarity with Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi of Ile Ife, Annie Idibia and media personality, Toke Makinwa to speak up against domestic violence.

Actress and mother of two, Mercy Aigbe asked that women speak up and be unashamed and stop shielding their abuser. She also said under no circumstances should a man hit his wife.

”Come out, speak about it. And if possible prosecute the person and the person is brought to book. Violence is a No No. There is no shame in our shame.”

She also told people to stop shaming her for speaking about her experience.

Tonto Dikeh, mother of one, also a victim of domestic abuse advised women to speak up and save their lives as well as that of their kids. She mentioned that she isn’t advocating for divorce, but women need to speak out.

She also advised that instead of resorting to violence, couples should rather go for therapy, calm down or walk away.

Also, Queen Wuraola Ogunwusi who is the wife of the Ooni of Ife mentioned that both emotional and physical domestic abuse must not be tolerated.
