Texas Woman On Life Support After Nose Job Goes Awry
A Texas woman and real estate agent who went to Mexico for a discount nose last month has ended up in a coma after complications from the plastic surgery.
Laura Avila, 36, traveled to Juarez with her fiancé, Enrique Cruz, in late October for the rhinoplasty, according to what her sister, Angie Avila wrote on a GoFundMe page.
At some point during the surgery, Laura reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest for about four minutes and was put into a medically induced coma to prevent further damage.
Her sister, Angie Avila, told CBS that doctors admitted to putting the anesthesia in the wrong place in her spine, which caused brain swelling and kidney failure, as well as the cardiac arrest.
Avila was taken out of the coma and is now on life support and has begun to have seizures, according to her family.
Avila was transferred to a hospital in El Paso last week after four days in a Mexican hospital, where she could not be moved.
On Tuesday, her family said that the El Paso doctors gave them two options: “to let her go in peace or have her physically here.”
“If she were to improve, it is possible she could only regain minimal functioning skills,” they said.
The Avilas said they are not yet ready to make a decision and are trying to secure a transfer to another hospital.
