My cousin Idera was involved with a guy called Tony and everyone was aware of their relationship.
They met at the University and were going steady when Idera became pregnant. Since everyone knew whom she was seeing, we had assumed there was going to be a wedding and we were all gearing up for the occasion when Tony pulled the plug off our feet.
He outrightly denied being responsible for my cousin’s pregnancy.Was there anyone who didn’t try to make Tony accept responsibility for his deed?
He insulted my aunt and uncle- Idera’s parents; my grandma who would always entertain Tony whenever he visited was not spared from his insults, too.
The humiliation was too much for Idera such that she chose to defer her education. She was actually going to stop going to school because there was no way she would not come across Tony since they were in the same Institution but we prevailed on her to rather defer than end her studies.
Ours is a big family (extended family) so we Idera’s cousins took turns in keeping watch over her. The whole extended family showed her lots of love and understanding and it was concluded that the unborn child would bear our family name.
Even Tony’s parents who knew about his steady relationship with my cousin chose to believe their son, Tony.
Anyways, much later, we found out that Idera’s best friend in same school with them was the one who told Tony that Idera was seeing another guy in school and that the other guy had rejected her pregnancy which explained why she was claiming it was Tony’s.
Idera explained that truly the other guy was asking her out and she had confided in her best friend, Bimpe that she liked the guy but that there wasn’t anything between them.
This gist I am sharing with you happened over two decades ago and this is where I fear Karma!
On the day Idera put to bed, I was with her at the hospital. I was training to be a nurse then so we got her registered in the hospital where I was undergoing my training.
I kept tabs on her as her labour progressed and when it was time for my cousin to push, she touched blood from her vagina, drop it on her tongue then as she painfully pushed to birth her son, she started to wail and curse Tony.
We were all shocked!
She swore that for the humiliation he put her through and for denying her pregnancy, that only if he was not responsible for her pregnancy would he ever have other children of his own. She also cursed him that his life will forever be unstable. The older nurses tried to shut her up but she refused. She was crying and cursing at the same time …
Fast forward till now, Idera’s son – who by the way bears my family name- is the only child Tony ever fathered till date.
I had actually forgotten about the curse until Tony and his parents appeared at our family house to plead for forgiveness. According to them, some prophet told them that if they do not go and do right by Idera and her son, Tony would never have any child of his own.
Tony, they said had been married four times over but none of the women lasted with him because they could not conceive. It turned out that once those women got involved with other men, they conceived and birthed children. By the time the 4th woman left and under one year, she was said to have birthed a set of twins, Tony and his family knew something was amiss.
Fortunately for them, when Tony married the 5thwife, she chose to help him rather than run away like the others. She was the one who took him to the prophet who told him he needed to go and do right by my cousin and her son if he desires to ever be a father hence their visitation to our family house.
Thankfully, Idera , who is now married stays in SA with her husband & children including her first son so they were told to give our family some time to get in touch with Idera.
Of course, yours truly was present at the meeting though neither Idera nor I had ever told our family members what she did happened on the day Idera put to bed.
