Zamfara First Lady Pushes For Girl-child Education & Women Empowerment
Education is one of the most critical areas of empowerment for the girl-child and women in general. It is also an area that offers some of the clearest examples of discrimination women suffer. Among children not attending school there are twice as many girls as boys, and among illiterate adults there are twice as many women as men.
Offering girls basic education is one sure way of giving them much greater power of enabling them to make genuine choices over the kinds of lives they wish to lead. This is not a luxury.
The wife of the new governor of Zamfara state, Hajia Aisha Matawalle, has revealed her plans to prioritise girl-child education in the state. The first lady revealed this during a press briefing at the Government House, Gusau, on Saturday, PUNCH reports.

Speaking further, hajia Aisha said that the educated woman had better skills and self confidence to raise children with sound characters for a better society more than her uneducated counterparts. She was quoted saying:
”I will focus my programme on the girl-child education because it is one of the most critical areas of women empowerment.”
In addition, Mrs Matawalle promised that women in the state would also be empowered financially to achieve sustainable life styles. She added:
“As a woman, my major concern will revolve around women and children. These are some of the areas that I believe are vital to the development of our state.
As we embark on this journey, I promise that we will not distance ourselves but rather come to you at the grassroots to create a big family.”
