Funke Akindele Opens Up About Going Through An Emotional Experience That Pushed Her To Seek Therapy 

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele has opened up about a deeply emotional experience that pushed her to seek therapy for the first time in her life.

In a candid revelation on media personality, Chude’s talk show, the Battle on Buka Street star shared the emotional burden she had silently borne and the turning point when she realized she could no longer keep it all in.

The mother of two revealed that after losing her mother and going through intense personal struggles, she felt completely overwhelmed.

She recounted how being mocked for not having a husband during her political campaign broke her emotionally.

It would be recalled that Funke ran for the position of Deputy Governor of Lagos State in the 2023 general elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Although her political ambition made headlines, it also exposed her to harsh criticism from certain quarters. She shared:

“I told myself, I can’t continue like this. You need to speak. There was one video I watched where women were mocking me for not having a husband, and I want to do politics.

I broke down and cried. I told myself I needed to speak to a therapist, and I felt better.”

Akindele noted that while she had always believed in the value of therapy, she had long resisted it due to fears of gossip and public scrutiny.

Between societal expectations, family pressure, and personal grief, she found herself breaking down with no one to truly talk to. And even though she was suffering, she hesitated to seek professional help.

She continued:

“I thought they would carry it. People would talk about me. People would know my business.

Right from the scratch, I’ve always known that therapy was important, but never submitted to it because I didn’t want them to carry my gist. I kept acting strong while they were throwing everything at me.”

However, when it all became too much, she finally spoke to a therapist—and it made a difference. She said:

“Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better.”

The actress, whose works have consistently broken box office records in Nigeria, encouraged others going through emotional distress to not suffer in silence.

“I want to advise you out there that it is very important to speak up,” she concluded.
