Mum Suspected of Murdering 8 Children ‘Begged God For Forgiveness’

Haunting pleas for forgiveness came from the house of horrors where a mother is suspected of knifing to death eight children before stabbing herself, says a witness.

Mersane Warria – believed to be the mother of seven of the victims aged between 18 months and 15 – was tonight recovering in hospital with chest wounds thought to be self-inflicted.

A neighbour said before the mass tragedy was discovered, the mother was shouting: “Don’t let them take them away. God bless us. Forgive me for what I’ll do.”

Another neighbour said she saw Warria, also known as Raina Thaiday, taking possessions from her home saying she was going to “make a fresh start”.

Warria, 34, was said to be in a stable condition and due for a mental health assessment, following the killings in Cairns on Australia’s north-east coast.

A man thought to be the children’s step-father, who lived at the address, was also in hospital.

A 20-year-old brother of many of the victims called police after walking into his house to find most of his family dead in the early hours of yesterday.

Ms Warria’s devastated cousin, Lisa Thaiday, said: “I just can’t believe it. Those poor babies.”

She added that the sibling who arrived home to find all his brothers and sisters dead “needed comforting”.

A police officer said it was like “something out of a horror movie” but declined to give details.

A spokesman said: “It’s a tragic and traumatic with so many deceased in one place.”

Police confirmed Ms Warria was a person of interest in relation to the deaths of her seven children and a niece.

Blood and DNA samples have been taken for analysis.

Warria was heard screaming in a mixture of English and Torres Strait Creole, the language of islanders off the Australian coast.

A 13-year-old girl who met Warria on Thursday evening said: “She was saying stuff about God. She was saying, ‘Papa God gave me the power to do anything.’”

The youngster also said she shouted about being a “warrior”.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said: “This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country.”
