Cornell University Student Charged In Shotgun Murder Of CEO Dad

A Cornell University student reportedly gunned down his CEO father with a shotgun at the family’s home in a wealthy Rochester suburb. The student, Charles Tan, 19, “fired multiple rounds,” blasting his dad in the face, neck, chest and arm on Monday evening, police said in court documents.

The Ivy Leaguer’s mother, Qing Tan, frantically called police to the spacious Pittsford house shortly before 6 p.m. She told a dispatcher Tan had shot her husband, 49-year-Ling Tan, the CEO of Dynamax Imaging, authorities said.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies found the mother and son standing in the driveway when they arrived.

Inside, deputies discovered the father’s dead body and found a shotgun in the garage.

Tan was arraigned on a charge second-degree murder at 6 a.m. on Tuesday in Pittsford town court and held without bail at Monroe County Jail.

Deputies had responded on “ a couple of occasions” in the past for domestic-related calls, sheriff’s Cpl. John Helfer told the Daily News.

He declined to describe the nature of those incidents, but neighbors claimed they’d heard family members shouting in the past. One recalled seeing Qing Tan shoving her husband and yelling in the garden.

“I heard yelling numerous times — even with the house closed up,” neighbor Samantha LiMuti told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

The son, who played prep football at Pittsford Mendona High School and later joined his college sprint football squad, studied in the Agricultural and Life Sciences department at Cornell.

Neighbors described him as kind and friendly.

“He is always a very nice boy,” neighbor Catherine Toy told the Democrat and Chronicle. “I’m sure all the neighbors will support him.”
