Spanish Olympian, Ana Peleteiro Shares Horrifying Rape And Abuse Ordeal She Suffered At The Hands Of A Former Partner
Spanish Olympian, Ana Peleteiro has spoken out on the horrifying rape and abuse ordeal she suffered at the hands of a former partner.
The highly decorated triple jumper, is currently married to French triple jumper Benjamin Compaore.
The 29-year-old recently took to TikTok to release a video on her Channel where she bravely recounted what she was a victim of in her past relationship.
The European champion joined the viral social media trend under the name ‘y aun asi me quede’, which means ‘And Yet I Stayed’, where several girls record themselves recounting situations of abuse in an attempt to help other women who are facing something similar.
According to Peleteiro, she suffered psychological abuse and repeated rapes from the former partner.
“I would wake up at night having sex without consent. And yet I stayed. Everything about me changed, from my clothes to my hair, the way I acted with my family, distancing myself from so many people, and yet I stayed,”
the Olympic triple jump medalist said in Spanish.
“He told me that if we didn’t have sex whenever he wanted, it would damage the relationship and that, after all, those who don’t eat at home eat out. And (he said) that if he was unfaithful to me later, I shouldn’t be surprised. And yet I stayed.”
Peleteiro recounted how her ex-partner justified that if she withheld intimacy she shouldn’t be surprised that he was unfaithful. She also alleged that he gaslight her into thinking that signs of cheating were fabricated by her.
“If I went to his house on the weekends, he would disappear and suddenly I knew absolutely nothing.
And throughout the weekend he would say good morning to me, maybe sporadically one day, and he would excuse himself by saying that he needed his space and that I had to trust him and let him do those things because that was normal in a relationship. And yet I stayed.
He would come back from those trips with hickeys on his body and he would tell me that they were bites from bugs that perhaps were in his mattress. And yet I stayed.”
Peleteiro also went onto highlight the emotional manipulation she suffered and how her former partner’s disloyalty was played against her. She continued:
“Every time I suspected that he was talking to another girl, whether he was trying to or (I) was about to discover an infidelity, he told me that I was completely crazy, that it was all inventions in my head.
I discovered hundreds of emails with his ex-partner deleting his own, driving her crazy, telling me that she was obsessed with him. And yet I stayed.
He received letters from his lovers at home. And many times I received the letters and out of distrust I read them and said that they were obsessed with him. And yet I stayed.”
Peleteiro concluded her video by highlighting the reason why she had opened up about her situation and insisted there is a way out for women who find themselves in a similar position. She said:
“I’m not going to continue (this video) because I think it’s been enough, but I simply wanted to do it so that if you identify with any of these signs, please, run away.
You will never be happy and they are doing you a lot of harm. Try to go to therapy because leaving a relationship with a narcissist is very complicated, since they reduce your self-esteem to minus 20.
But with help and with people around you who love you, you can get out and start from scratch, and live a real, good and beautiful life.”
Peleteiro, who is Spain’s national record holder in the triple jump, won a gold medal at the 2024 European Championships, while she also picked up bronze medals at the 2020 Olympics and World Championships in 2018 and 2024.
