I had fibroids removed from my womb about 2 years ago. Recently, I noticed the same symptoms I experienced before the fibroids were taken out. I am too scared to go for another scan. Could it be that the fibroid have returned? If they have, what should I do?
Dr. Alex Molokwu (OB-GYN) Says:
This benign growth of the uterus, called fibroid, is truly the bane of the African woman. The exact cause of fibroid formation is not known. However, it is known that they develop from immature smooth muscles of the uterus which may contain many fibroids in various stages of development and degeneration. Only 2% fibroids are solitary and some may grow to massive size of a football. The normal uterus measures 7.5 cm in length, 5.0 cm in breath at its upper part, and about 2.5 cm in thickness.
It is often extremely difficult to remove all fibroids at surgery. It is true that the fibroid might have returned. The female normal hormones, (particularly oestrogen) are responsible for the growth of fibroids. They will stop growing when you become menopausal.
I strongly suggest that you see your Gynecologist for another appraisal vis-à-vis your future plan. Certainly the problem has a definitive solution.
