Court Dissolves 10-Year-Old Marriage Over Wife’s Stealing Habit

An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos on Friday dissolved a 10-year-old marriage over the woman’s penchant for stealing.

The plaintiff, Olawale Akanji, who resides at Akinwale Street, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos, had filed an application seeking to divorce his wife, Afusat, over her stealing habit, disobedience and adultery.

In the application filed at the court in October 2014, Akanji, a carpenter, said he could no longer tolerate his wife in the house.
Akanji, 34, said the latest incident, which informed his decision to seek divorce was the pregnancy his wife was carrying that he suspected did not belong to him.

The complainant, who also alleged that Afusat, 33, was always stealing his money from his wardrobe, urged the court to dissolve the marriage.
The respondent, a hairdresser, denied all the allegations.

“I don’t steal my husband’s money, even though he is very tight-fisted. He gives us N300 feeding allowance daily and I would be the one to feed his aged mother and father that live with us.I usually fetch water for sale, that is where I get money to feed the family.
He is always thinking that I am stealing his money or I have been engaging in extra-marital affairs, please help me save my marriage,” she said.

Delivering judgment, the president of the court, Olu Adebiyi, said he was convinced that the couple could no longer live together as the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions.

Adebiyi ordered the parties to go their separate ways. He also ruled that the petitioner should enroll the defendant in ante-natal clinic.
“The paternity of the pregnancy cannot be established now until a DNA test proves its ownership after delivery,” he said.

He further directed that Akanji should pay for the accommodation of the woman and be responsible for the schooling, feeding and medical allowances of their two children.

  • It’s so sad. The husband complained of stealing, disobedience and adultery. Since the man said he had, had enough of the wife, she should go. Its the one that wears the shoe that knows where it pinches.!

  • Hmmmmm. Seems 2 me dat d man is tired of living 2gether with her but my question is dis what if d preg turns 2 be his?

  • Lagos n it’s over population, no kind of tragic stories wey we no go hear from them. The man had better pray dat d baby will nt turn out to be his.

  • Since de wife is pleading for forgiveness why can’t de husband let go and find a way to help her out if truly she steals from him.At least for de sake of de kids.

  • I think the man is just looking for a way to end d marriage though I think it’s better for d wife better to b alone than in dat kind of marriage. Just hope d man does all the court asked him to do for the woman

  • Not enough reasons but then instead of stories dat touches d heart, let them go their separate ways. Period.

  • The man seem incapable of handling his responsibilty thereby finding faults i will rather they stay seperate before we hear sad stories.

  • Lol..which is more expensive now,the #300 naira he accused the wife for stealing or the accommodation and child welfare he has to provide regularly

  • He gives 300naira everyday and yet has money to file for divorce? He better comply to all the judge has said, stingy man.

  • Forever is too long to be in agony n pain……Rabbish at the man is tired didn’t he know what he was signing up for…..Well,he should carry out the law order..you have a wife that struggles to fetch water n feed ur parents yet ur talking of 300naira….Am sure if he’s asked how much he’s wife stole..it will be a shocker

  • I thank God he went the law
    instead of battering her himself
but I know he is Lieing, he is simply tired of the marriage and wants out, there are men like that…..
thank God she is a hussler,
    she would always survive
