Parents reportedly line up in massive numbers at the tiny village of Betul in Madhya Pradesh, India, to roll their babies and older children in cow manure. It is believed the bizarre tradition, which has been upheld for centuries, brings their children good luck and protects them from diseases. Often, the children yell or watch in horror as their beloved parents smear their bodies in cow dung.
The practice is followed a day after Diwali – the biggest Indian celebration, also known as the festival of lights. The cow is considered one of the most sacred animals in Hinduism and worshipped as revered creatures.
