5 Reasons Pregnant Women Hardly Get Enough Sleep

During your pregnancy, people would advice you to get as much sleep as you can. Well, that’s probably because these people have completely forgotten that nobody gets enough sleep during pregnancy or they simply have never been pregnant.

Apart from the first trimester when you’ll likely sleep a lot, you should expect to be constantly awake subsequently until sometime around your child’s first birthday. Lol! Why? This is because there will be just too many things distracting you from sleep!

Here are some of the top reasons you won’t be getting much sleep during your pregnancy…

  •  Bathroom Breaks

Even if you barely do any exercise during your pregnancy, you’d definitely still be getting enough from running to the toilet and back 100 times a day. You will probably need to pee almost 15 times at night too, which means you won’t be getting any real sleep. Sucks.

  •  When your baby decides to drop some moves

You know that moment when your baby thinks he’s Michael Jackson and moon walks all over your womb? Sad for you because when it happens at night, YOU WILL STOP SLEEPING. Yep, those long awaited adorable “little” kicks and nudges will amp up at bedtime and will leave you unable to sleep. And, as great as it feels for your growing baby to move around inside you, you’d be left feeling a little grumpy when your tiny baby waits for you to snuggle up in bed before it starts to practice it’s cartwheels.

  • Your To-Do List
Being pregnant brings with it a pretty long to do list. The things you need to buy for the baby, things you need to sort around the house, and an ever-growing list of things you need to do at work before you start your maternity leave. It’s normal to find that you stay up at night musing over these things and even forget you have to sleep!

It could help to delegate a few things to your husband and mother or any other available family members and friends.

  • Baby Anxieties

We all know how frightening childbirth and raising a child can be made to seem. It’s normal for expectant mothers to be kept up at night worrying about how their labour would go or other pregnancy and post-pregnancy issues.

What if something goes wrong? What if I can’t breastfeed? What if I’m not cut out for motherhood? What if I don’t enjoy being a mum? What if my baby doesn’t like or bond with me?

The mind can really just go into overdrive!

  • The Crazy Dream
Not many things are as weird as the dreams of a pregnant woman. If you are able to catch a few hours of sleep, you’ll soon be woken up wondering what the hell just happened. You will wonder whether you really just flogged your mother-in-law or if you actually left your baby on a bus and flew home on a giant eagle. And you can spend the next three hours wide awake trying to decipher what your dream meant. Why would you flog your mother-in-law? Is it a premonition? Are you actually going to leave your baby on a bus one day? Don’t worry, it was just another crazy pregnancy dream.
