NUC Scraps Pre-degree And Diploma Programmes In Nigerian Universities
Pre-degree and diploma programmes in the Nigerian University System (NUS) have been cancelled, Vanguard reports.
The National Universities Commission (NUC), which took the action, instructed all universities to leave the running of such programmes for polytechnics and concentrate efforts on producing human capital in the core undergraduate, part-time and post-graduate courses.
Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, gave this order at the meeting held on October 12 with vice chancellors of the 143 universities in the country, according to a statement by the NUC.
”Running sub-degree diplomas was not the business of Universities, but that of Polytechnics, more so when the Federal Government, as far back as November, 2001, had issued a circular stating that such diplomas could not be used for employment or promotion purposes in the Public Service,” he said.
He then called on Universities running the programmes to begin the process of winding them down.
