Aisha Buhari Set Off ‘Women Against Corruption Campaign’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, flagged off the Nigerian Women Against Corruption, WAC project, at the International Conference Center, Abuja with the aim of engaging women across the country in a nationwide sustainable fight against corruption.

Vanguard reports that Ibrahim Magu, who is the acting chairman of the commission, said that the event was in collaboration with the office of the wife of the President and would be set off by Her Excellency Hajia Aisha Muhammadu Buhari at nine o’clock Wednesday morning. The programme also had Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar (retd), who was Nigeria’s first female Chief Justice as the guest speaker.

“The choice of women is strategic, because we believe that they are torch-bearers in the anti-corruption crusade, and it is because of the important role they play in making the society a better place. The WAC project is aimed at galvanizing Nigerian women to buy into the corruption fight and also to raise the consciousness of the consequences of corruption in the minds of their households.” Mr magu said

The wife of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, said at the event that she had never accepted gifts and wasn’t planning on starting to do so.

“Since we won the election, I have never collected any gift and till now I don’t and will never. I know the type of person that my husband is and I have to do everything necessary to safeguard the name and the family name.” She said

She urged Nigerian women to play active roles in the fight against corruption, insisting that all well-meaning members of the Nigerian public must rise to stop corruption in all facets of the society.
