Bizarre: Lagos Couple Beats Neighbor To Death Over Chickens 

A man identified as Segun Irein, alongside his wife, reportedly beat up their neighbor, Idowu Solaja  to death over a misunderstanding they had concerning chickens at their house on Babs Lawal Street in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased, Idowu, who was a chartered accountant, had complained to the couple that he was being disturbed by their chickens, as his house was apparently directly opposite that of the accused (“face me I face you”). However, the Ireins allegedly attacked him. The victim was said to have been later taken to a hospital by residents. He, however, died shortly after. His corpse was deposited in a morgue while the couple were arrested by the police. He is said to be survived by his wife and four children.

Correspondents who visited the community the next day, succeeded in getting an eye witness account on the promise of anonymity. The man shared that Mr Irein initially started rearing pigs, upon complains of Mr Idowu and the landlord, he stopped and shortly after started selling chickens.

The older sister of the deceased, who did not want to be identified, said Idowu was taking one of his children to school on Monday when he saw some chickens being fed in the roost at Segun’s house.

 “He went to the house and knocked at the door repeatedly, but nobody answered him. He banged harder and the man’s wife, Sola, came out and asked him what he wanted from them again. Idowu insisted on speaking to her husband. The man came out and they started exchanging words. Because the doorstep was elevated above the ground where Idowu stood, it was easier for Segun to grab Idowu by the neck. In the ensuing scuffle, they both fell down. The wife picked a stone and hit Idowu in different parts of the body.” She said

Someone passing by who saw the incident, raised the alarm as residents rushed to the scene to separate them. Witnesses say he was drenched in blood, as he drove himself to the Igbogbo Police Division where he reported the attack before heading to the hospital. PUNCH Metro also gathered that Idowu was treated and given some drugs for the injuries he sustained in the eyes.

Residents pleaded with him to withdraw the case, which he reportedly did. Shortly after getting home, he slumped and died. The victim’s wife, Modupe Solaja, who has been married to him for over 20 years, has called for justice. She said she is yet to inform their first child who is an undergraduate at the Adeleke University in Osun State as of the time of this report.

“My husband was planning to pay her school fees of about N1.2m this weekend. I am a full time housewife. How will I cope with the school fees of four children? Don’t let me suffer for nothing,” she cried.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, also issuing an autopsy on the corpse.
