Why Pregnant First Time Mum Carried One of her Dead Twins to Full Term
Emma Dutton, was filled with the joy of being a first time mum to her twin boys, only to have that joy snatched away from her. Doctors revealed shortly into her pregnancy that her boys had a rare condition called twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a condition where one baby receives a higher blood flow from the placenta than the other. As a result one of her babies died in her womb.
For her other son to be born in good health, 30 year old Emma had to carry his dead brother alongside his twin till the end of her pregnancy. She welcomed Prince Oliver 15 weeks later through a c-section at a very healthy weight, and his late brother was removed.
“To have that news and then be told one of them had died was just absolutely devastating. After that, I was convinced I’d lose the other one too. He [Elijah] stayed with me until he was born. It was incredibly sad, but I’m also pleased they had the chance to be born together.” Emma told Sun UK
The couple now run a fundraising group to support a TTS Registry, and help medics learn more about the disease and hopefully save lives.
