Woman Who Attempted to Commit Suicide Arraigned in Court

Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, a married woman who attempted to end her life by jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge last month was brought before an Ebute Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos on Monday.
The 51-year-old textile trader was rescued by a police patrol team after she tried to jump into the lagoon. Reports state that Titilayo was in a taxi heading towards Oworonshoki when she told the driver to stop on the bridge, and then she subsequently tried to kill herself due to financial problems. News sources claim that the accused stated she had been having sleepless nights since she was allegedly duped of N18.7 million by a Bureau-de-Change operator sometime in 2015.
Momoh was arraigned by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID), Yaba, on a one-count charge of attempted suicide. This is listed as a criminal charge under Section 235 Cap C17, Volume 3 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The defendant however pleaded not guilty. The accused may, on conviction, be sentenced to a life imprisonment according to the provisions of the section.
She was however granted N500, 000 bail. The presiding Magistrate,T. A. Elias also ordered the defendant to undergo psychiatric evaluation before her next court appearance.
