We earlier reported the tragic death of a 22-year-old South African woman, Karabo Mokoena, who was murdered and burnt beyond recognition by her abusive ex-boyfriend, Sandile Mantsoe (read here).
Giving an update on the sad incident, her alleged murderer, 27, appeared in court in Johannesburg to face murder charges, yesterday after he was arrested two days ago.
According to new revelations in court, Karabo’s father, Tshepo Mokoena says Sandile’s family was seen on CCTV cleaning the apartment where he murdered her daughter and leaving with linen.
It was also confirmed that Sandile “pointed out” the scene where he allegedly dumped Karabo’s body, AfricaMV reports.
Mokoena’s distraught mother wept while she made her way around the courthouse surrounded by an entourage of relatives and friends.
On Thursday afternoon, the family went to the mortuary to identify her body. Mokoena said he was unable to recognise his niece in the picture provided by the mortuary, according to News24.
”Everyone is traumatised, I mean if your child is burnt beyond recognition, it’s just sad. I could not even see the child, we had to look through pictures to identify her.”
Meanwhile, Police are still waiting for DNA tests to confirm the identity of the body, which they said was “badly burned”.
The case has prompted an outpouring of anger and grief in South Africa, mostly by women who took to social media to share stories of abuse they had suffered at the hands of their partners.
Mokoena’s family had reported her missing and a search for her had intensified‚ with her pictures circulating on social media.
On Thursday‚ her uncle‚ who regarded her as a daughter‚ announced that she had been found dead‚ alleging that the boyfriend had confessed to killing her.
Sandile will remain in custody as his case will be heard on 24th May.
