Dear MIMsters: Marriage Is a Beautiful Thing If We Meet the Right Person | My Story

Marriage is a beautiful thing if we meet the right person. It breaks my heart to see marriages collapse before they even started. I wonder what has gone wrong with our generation. I remembered growing up, mum used to tell us (five daughters) that marriage is no bed of roses.

I remembered my parents though had their fair share of thorns that comes with marriage, never ate alone. Mum called dad (‘dede m’ which means in igbo, “my brother”). I grew up appreciating marriage even though I told her I won’t call my husband dede????.

I have been married for 6 years now with 2 kids and I must say my mum’s words and that which I gathered from knowledge acquired has been seeing us through. Hubby isn’t the communicative type but I make sure that the sun never goes down twice on any issue we have. I don’t hesitate to point out things that could cost us as a family especially around finances. I didn’t look back or count cost for once. I worked full time at some point to support hubby through his studies.

I am happy to say hubby is done, secured a good job and is now supporting me through mine ( an MRes) in view of the higher end. We are best of friends that have constantly supported each other (we met whilst studying elsewhere).

Marriage is a beautiful thing if we meet the right person.

There should be no haste in making any marital decision, no competition and financial gains should not be the focal point for going into one. It’s a serious obligation that should be respected.

Hubby and I met at the university, we didn’t have anything but raised enough to finance our wedding. So sisters/brothers in the house, we can all have beautiful relationships if we don’t go looking for the wrong things in men which are looks, finance, wealth and luxury.

My Mum and dad have been married now for 51 years! I am sure in this generation, can well see our marriages last even longer.
