Dear MIMSters: That Moment Hubby’s Step-Mom’s Thoughtlessness Backfired On Her Is BAE
Women! We sometimes, are our own enemies. My reaction to this story I am about to tell you is amusing but hubby thinks it’s a big issue.
Hubby is from a polygamous home. His father has 3 wives. My MIL was wife number 2 but she is late. The first wife, I learnt, left FIL after the death of my MIL, leaving wife number 3 alone with their husband. And swiftly, I learnt she took over every affair of the home.
The first wife has 3 daughters with FIL, my MIL had 2 sons and 1 daughter with him while wife number 3 has 1 daughter.

Now, it is common knowledge all over the family that whenever there is a function, step MIL would collect a lot of money from FIL but would under prepare for the occasion. She would hoard food and drinks, purchase low quality asoebi and demand for more than its worth.
I married into all these shenanigans of hers and as a sharp babe, I have since been planning on how to get her paid in her own coin.
Why? Someone may want to ask! Because she made a mess of my wedding day.
You see, hubby is FIL’s first son, and his was the first marriage where FIL would be going to ask for a girl’s hand in marriage unlike the 3 weddings that took place in the family before mine.

We are Yorubas, and our culture is very rich. Yoruba weddings, especially the engagement ceremonies, are always interesting. The bride’s family would give the groom’s family a list of things to bring to them and it depends on how rich the latter is, they always love to leave a statement.
Well, FIL, being a rich man and a high chief, who had collected bride’s items from the husbands of his three daughters, was looking forward to having a ‘talk of the town’ ceremony for his first son but this wicked woman got in the way. She collected a huge sum of money from FIL but spent less for the items. My family requested for 42 tubers of yam. FIL gave her money for 60 big tubers, but this woman brought 21 skinny looking tubers of yam to my family. That’s not all she did o, she ensured everything was below standard.
That FIL was embarrassed that day is an understatement!

The word on the street is that even though FIL is a rich man, his parties always suck! No thanks to step MIL’s thoughtlessness; she is so miserly that she got herself served and am I glad!
This is what happened!
Two Saturdays ago, it was her only daughter’s wedding so some how, we all felt she would prepare better this time around. And since she would never allow anyone in the family get involved with party plans, we all chose to watch. Hubby’s only sister, Temi came to visit us and she asked that we plan for our guests and FIL’s guests outside step MIL’s plans but hubby refused. However, Temi and I went ahead.
Now, because this woman had always used the same vendors for all her shenanigans, those ones did not know where to draw the line. This is supposed to be their principal’s only child’s wedding but it turned out the worst party the family has ever had. There is a hall with capacity to seat 400 guests that the family uses for their functions, but she said for her only child, she wanted a bigger space. She got this 700 seater hall but she chose to pay her vendors same as she used to pay them for 400 seater hall.
Now, the hall has a gallery: the downstairs could seat 500 guests while the gallery could conveniently seat 200 guests. She told the hall management that she only wanted the ground floor. Can you beat that?! In her thought, she had calculated that people would migrate to the gallery and she would feign ignorance to the management. The first shocker she got was that the gallery was securely locked. And this woman had invited the whole of Lagos.
People were standing, the drinks were not cold, the hall was too full and the air-conditioning system could not go round. Even more, the food was badly cooked, and the ushers were outnumbered -everything that could go wrong was wrong with her plans.

Temi and I had arranged for cold drink vans, good food and sufficient ushers, and to save the day, we did a transfer to the hall management to secure the gallery so that people could be comfortably seated. Step MIL’s vendor were abandoned and we took over. Every where became lit and we could see relief on the bride’s face.
Party over now! FIL was full of thanks to Temi and I. Family members thanked us for saving FIL’s face and the man even told everyone that henceforth, Temi & I would be in charge of family parties. The bride has not stopped calling to thank us. Funny enough, she used to be an a** but she was grateful to us for saving her day.
Can you believe that rather than thank us, step MIL has declared war against me?!
She said I forgot my place as a wife and hubby is scared. Why? Because step MIL is known to be diabolical and so I said to hubby, “If you people are scared of her, I am not. I will show her that I serve a living God.”
