Mom Skipped Her Own Graduation Ceremony For Her Son’s, Then Got The Sweetest Surprise | WATCH
You all know what it means to spend countless hours studying -you sacrifice sleep and time with friends all leading up to your graduation. It definitely isn’t something you want to miss! But sometimes, more important things take precedence, like family.
Michigan, mom Sharonda Wilson was looking forward to getting her diploma at her graduation from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, but there was just one problem, her son, Stephan Wilson, was also graduating on the same day at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
Sharonda was all set to forgo her own. But her son’s school and hers had a different idea. Sharonda earned a bachelor of science in business administration, and her son earned a bachelor of arts in music theater.
In the days leading up to the graduation, Wilson posted her predicament on Facebook. One of the students who works in the president’s office at Central Michigan saw it and told Central Michigan’s president, Bob Davies, about the situation.
What happened next was one of the sweetest things. CMU president heard about the situation and reportedly called the president of FSU, David Eisler, to see if his school could confer Wilson’s degree. “It was a very fast turnaround,” Ari Harris, the spokesman for Central Michigan said.
On Saturday morning, the graduation day (May 4), mom and son both walked across the stage at Central Michigan.
During the ceremony, President Davies announced he’d heard about Sharonda’s selfless choice and had promptly called Ferris president. Stephan’s mouth dropped open. He knew what this meant.
In a touching speech, President Davies then proceeded to confer Sharonda’s bachelor’s degree on behalf of FSU’s president and trustees.

“Sharonda and Stephan both put in the long hours and hard work, and they deserved the chance to celebrate together as a family. We appreciated the opportunity to partner with our friends at Ferris State to recognize and celebrate this milestone achievement for both Stephan and Sharonda.”
Stephan said in a statement:
”Dr. Davies really shocked me. I told a friend of mine that (my) mom was skipping her graduation to be with me, and she used her magic to help Dr. Davies orchestrate that moment.
I had been looking forward to walking across that stage and accepting my degree for a long, long time. Earning my degree was such a huge milestone in my life, and having my mom with me to celebrate that moment was an unbelievable blessing. I am so proud of us both.”
Nobody understood how meaningful this moment was for Sharonda more than her son, who pumped his fist into the air while everyone in attendance clapped and cheered. It’s a day neither mother or son will ever forget.
Being a mother means making sacrifices for your children, but it doesn’t make your personal achievements any less praiseworthy.
We’re so excited Sharonda not only got to celebrate Stephan’s graduation, but her own as well!
