Celebrity Mum, Serena Williams Talks On How Hard Weaning Alexis Was For Her
Mother-of-one and 23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams who gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr on 1 September 2017, seven months after beating her sister Venus in the final of the Australian Open, said she cried when she stopped breastfeeding upon resuming her tennis career.
Since returning to tennis in March 2018, Williams has had to face spending less time with her one-year-old daughter, a decision she hasnât taken lightly.
âNow that I have Olympia, she is my absolute priority â spending as much time as possible with her every day is so important to me,â
the tennis player wrote in an essay for Forbes to mark International Womenâs Day.
âBut Iâm still training to win Grand Slams and sometimes I have to make hard choices about how I spend my time. Iâve cried over Olympia so many times that Iâve lost count.â
Williams explained she cried when she stopped breastfeeding and when she missed her daughterâs first steps, as sheâd been busy training at the time.
âIâm honest about my struggles as a working mum because I want other women out there to know they are not alone,â
she stated.
âWe have to show ourselves and our female counterparts compassion and reality.â
In her essay, Williams also spoke about perfection, saying that itâs an âimpossible goalâ people shouldnât strive towards. The tennis player explained while all women are âsuperheroesâ, they still require help from one another for guidance and support.
âWe need to give each other grace when we fall shortâand when society sets unrealistic expectations or our workplaces have antiquated rules,â
she said.
âWe must band together and fight for whatâs fair.â
