A Nigerian doctor has decried the high rate of paternity fraud in the country after an encounter with the mother of one of his patients necessitated his stance. The doctor, Adams Ayeni took to his Twitter handle @Adamsayeni to narrate how a woman brought in her child with a packed cell volume (PVC) of only 8 percent. In the course of his investigation, he discovered that the child was a sickle cell carrier and explained the situation to the mother, asking her to return with her husband for counseling.
According to the doctor, the distraught mum took to ‘begging’ him to not bring the news to the notice of her husband who has an AA genotype. The doctor sworn to secrecy by the ethics of his profession said that there’s not much he can do if the woman does not reveal the truth to her husband.

He, however, advised Nigerian men to insist on DNA tests to ascertain the paternity of their children, even as he claimed that three out of ten Nigerian men are raising a child that is not biologically theirs, unbeknownst to them.
The doctor said Nigeria has the second-highest rate of paternity fraud in the world after Jamaica. His assertion corroborates more standard reports carried out on a wider scale that proves 30 percent of Nigerian men are raising kids that aren’t theirs. Read here.

A child was brought in by the mother with a PCV of 8%. We discovered that the child has Sickle Cell Disease. I informed the mother & asked her to come with the father so that I can counsel them together. She begged me not to tell the ‘father’ who is AA. Guys, DNA test is a must!
When a follower asked the doctor what his course of action would be if the woman insisted on managing the condition secretly, he replied;
‘Only she has the right to tell the man & she was advised accordingly. Technically speaking, she & the ‘other man’ own the child, & therefore have full rights to nondisclosure.’
In a separate tweet, doctor Ayeni wrote;
3 out of 10 Nigerian men are not biological fathers of their children. Nigeria has the 2nd highest rate of paternity fraud in the world after Jamaica. Many men have been unknowingly raising children that are not theirs & to curb the trend, DNA test should be considered at birth.
