American Singer And Mom-Of-6, Madonna Took This Bold Step Because Of Her Son, David
Motherhood is sacrificial. It takes place at that stage of your life where you place your children- their aspirations and well-being at the front burner and totally get lost in it. Motherhood is selfless!
Madonna may be known as the Queen of Pop but the music legend is unraveling her commitment to seeing her children become successful in their chosen careers.
In the new issue of Vogue Italia, the 59-year-old music icon opened up about life with her youngest kids in Lisbon, Portugal where she moved last year to foster son, David Bandaâs budding soccer abilities.
And many parents can surely relate to the sacrifices sheâs made to cultivate her kidâs talents. The “Hung Up” songstress, who turns 60 on August 16, is in the process of embracing her inner soccer mom, which “requires you to have no life in a way.”
Madonna’s choice of Portugal as her new home wasn’t merely picked at random.
She told Vogue Italia that her 12-year-old son, David has dreamed of playing professional soccer for years.
”My son, who is going to be 13 on September 24, has wanted to play soccer professionally for years. Iâve been desperate to get him into the best academies with the best coaches, but the level of football in America is much lower than the rest of the world.
I saw his frustration, and I also felt it was a good time,” she said.

”Any woman who is a soccer mom could say it kind of requires you to have no life in a way, because things change from week to week and games change from weekend to weekend.
Sometimes theyâre in the city, sometimes theyâre not, and we would never know until Thursday night whether theyâre on Saturday or Sunday, if at twelve oâclock or later,â Madonna told the European glossy about her sonâs ever-changing schedule.
She added: âItâs impossible to make plans, and then you feel like youâre not being fair to your other kids, or being fair to me!â
Talking about her decision to move to Lisbon, the songstress and businesswoman who posed for a series of shots for photographer Mert & Marcus said:

”It was actually between three different cities that had soccer academies. And I thought, let me see if I could live somewhere else for a year and put my four youngest kids in a different environment, as I think itâs also important to expose them to different cultures and living in different places.
So, it was between Turin, Barcelona, and Benfica in Lisbon. I went to all those places and tried to imagine myself living there. Of course, Barcelona is a super fun city, and I like Turin as well, but Turin is not really a city for children.
Itâs a city for intellectuals; they have incredible museums and beautiful homes, but I didnât think it would be fun for them. I have to take everyone into account, not just whether it will be a good academy for David.
So I went to Lisbon, and it seemed the best all-around choice. (âŠ) [Portugal is] steeped in history, and the Portuguese empire has made its dent on the world.
The architecture is amazing. Itâs also the birthplace of slavery, and so there are musical influences which come from Angola and Cape Verde, and also from Spain.
And then on top of all of that, one of my favourite things to do in the whole world is to ride horses. I live in Lisbon, in Lapa, but when I go horse-riding I go to Comporta, I go to friendâs houses, I go to AlcĂĄcer.
I always say three fâs rule Portugal: fado, football and Fatima. Itâs also a very Catholic country, which suits me just fine.”
Madonnaâs 21-year-old adult daughter, Lourdes Leon (with ex Carlos Leon) and 17-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie (with ex Guy Ritchie) donât currently live with their mom; but the Grammy winner says her younger kids â David and Mercy James, both 12, and 5-year-old twins Estere and Stella â have all settled into life in Portugal, after foregoing three other cities with soccer academies.
âWhatâs amazing is how resilient they are and how they embraced all things, especially music, dance, soccer and sports â things that connect them to other people makes adaptation easier,â she said.

And while her children are all interested in the arts, the consummate entertainer doesnât expect them to follow in her footsteps â unless they want to.
âBecause of my work and traveling around the world, the things that I do and the places I find myself in, my children are very open-minded about everything, and Iâm very proud of that.
A lot of people say to me, âYou must really want your son to be a successful soccer player, your oldest daughter [Lourdes] to be a dancer, Rocco to be a painter.â And I always say no, what I want my children to be is loving, compassionate, responsible human beings,â Madonna said.
âI just want them to be good human beings that treat other human beings with dignity and respect, regardless of skin color, religion, gender. This is the most important thing, you know what I mean? If they happen to be the next Picasso or Cristiano Ronaldo, then great, thatâs just the cherry on the cake,â she added.
Madonna with her six children recently visited Malawi, the southeast African nation from where she adopted her four youngest kids.
Last year, her charity (Raising Malawi) opened the African countryâs first-ever childrenâs hospital: the Mercy James Centre for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care in Blantyre, Malawi.

And for her upcoming 60th birthday, Madonna has launched a Facebook fundraiser for Raising Malawi. The organization’s mission statement reads âsupports orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi through health, education and community support.â
âI love when my kids are in Africa,â Madonna said last year in a PEOPLE cover story. âTheir selfless behavior, compared to the normal complaining in the privileged world we live in, is great to see.â
