Depression afflicts millions of people worldwide. It can occur for many different reasons: bad economy, family problems, failure, genetics, environment, lack of adequate hydration or exercise, and other factors.

Of course, for some people, medication is necessary to beat depression and we are not saying to get off your medicines or avoid going to a doctor if you really need help. However, emerging evidence shows that lifestyle changes can greatly improve symptoms of depression.Ā

1. Keep fighting and turn to a higher power for help.

Iā€™ve been having a lot of highs and (more) lows lately. Depression comes and goes but Iā€™ve never had it bad enough that Iā€™ve felt I needed medication. Thereā€™s always been a reason that caused my anxiety and panic attacks but I could usually fix it with diet and exercise.

This time was different. I was in a BAD place. I didnā€™t want to leave my home, cook or go to the gym. I was even pushing loved ones away. Sometimes all it takes is one negative thought to cause a spiraling down effect to occur and BAM – Iā€™m at rock bottom. ? āž–

Listen, Iā€™m sorry this isnā€™t the typical IG ā€œmy life is perfect, look at how happy I REALLY amā€ post, but I canā€™t sugar coat the importance of Mental Health.. This is my current reality. Some days are harder than others.. but Iā€™m still fighting. ?? Every story isnā€™t always a beautiful one and I think itā€™s vital for us to keep it real more often. āž–

Please donā€™t think you are the only one going through a storm. I know itā€™s heavy but My umbrella is up too and you are not alone. ā˜”ļø āž– God will let you down low enough to let you know that you need him and He will Bring you high enough to let the world know that He is with you. ?? #HoldOn

4. Write down what youā€™re feeling and question your thoughts.

I think one of the most valuable things Iā€™ve ever done is hold myself accountable.
Hold myself accountable for my actions and reactions.
To get honest with myself about my feelings and my rationalities.
.
To know the difference between when Iā€™m allowing myself to have self destructive behavior and when my feelings are valid.

Because of this I have become so much more self aware. I take accountability when Iā€™m being selfish, when I make mistakes, when I am the person who is wrong. But I also learned to not let others dictate how I feel or act.
To not let other people tell me Iā€™m wrong or crazy for how I feel when I know itā€™s valid.

Iā€™ve had chronic depression since as long as I could remember.
I remember being like 7-8 years old and not understanding my feelings.
I remember being 13 and being told that I was too emotional.
That I was dramatic and that my feelings werenā€™t valid.
I remember wanting to end it all because I had never felt more alone.

Iā€™ve never known what itā€™s like not to have depression, itā€™s technically my normal and Iā€™ve come to terms with it. I actively choose to not let it define or control me.

I have taught myself how to figure out if what Iā€™m feeling is real or another trick my brain is making me feel. Itā€™s not easy dealing with something you donā€™t quite understand.
But we can choose not to let it control us.
Sometimes it helps to write things down.

If you struggle too maybe this will help.
Write down what you’re feeling.
Exactly.

Write down what is happening in your life, but the trick is you have to be honest. Really honest.
Donā€™t say my life sucks, if you have a roof over your head, a job, food to eat etc.
Be honest about what is good and bad. And then take accountability for it.
If you feel sad but know that itā€™s not because your life is bad but because your mind is a little different. Thatā€™s okay.
Now that you have some perspective and some truth you can work on it.
Take accountability for yourself, be kind to yourself but also be honest.

5. Join together in your community and spread awareness about mental health.
