Baby’s Growth & Development Milestones: 4-6 Months

Babies are expected to reach certain development milestones at certain stages. That being said, they still develop at their own pace. From the 4th month of a baby’s life, they reach a certain growth level, where they become more aware and they begin to want to know what their stubby hands and feet can do.

4th Month

Apart from being very playful, your baby has strong, developed neck muscles and are also getting stronger in other parts of the body:

• Holds head up steadily
• Can bear weight on legs
• Coos when you talk to him
• Does mini push-ups
• Might be able to grasp a toy, reach out for objects or roll over
• Imitates speech sounds like baba, dada
• May cut first tooth

5th Month

Your baby now has reached a physical, cognitive and visual milestone. Things are no longer in black and white, and movement is becoming a more attainable goal:

• Can distinguish between bold colors. Read colorful picture books with baby
• Can roll over. Place bright toys just beyond their reach to encourage them to roll
• Amuses himself by playing with hands and feet
• Turns towards new sounds
• Recognizes his/her own name
• May sit momentarily without support
• May become anxious when in the presence of strangers or unrecognizable faces
• Distinguishes emotions by tone of voice

6th Month

This is a different but interesting stage of cognitive, social, and physical development for baby:

• Turns towards sounds and voices
• Imitates sounds, blows bubbles
• Rolls in both direction
• Reaches for objects and mouths them
• Sits without support. Will most likely enjoy the tripod position, leaning forward with his arms extended for balance.
• May lunge forward or start crawling
• May jabber or combine syllables
• May drag object towards himself
• Uses voice to express joy & displeasure
