Parents Who Took Their Son On Holiday During School Period Fined £1,230
The British government does not joke with school attendance, so , parents are not allowed to yank their children off school without grave consequences.
According to Mirror Online;
Parents who took their child out of school for a five-day holiday have been hit with a £1,230 bill after council bosses sent the bailiffs in.
They were originally fined £120 for the unauthorised absence of their 14-year-old son from Sweyne Park School in Rayleigh, Essex – but then got a knock on the door from bailiffs in the middle of the night when they refused to pay the fine.
The couple were first convicted in November 2014 of failing to ensure their child regularly attended school, under the Education Act 1996.
They had taken their son on a family holiday to Spain, which was the teenager’s first time on a plane.
The family, from Hullbridge, Essex, unsuccessfully appealed against the fine and did not pay the fee.
But they were stunned to receive a knock at the door at night from bailiffs demanding £1,230.
The boy’s grandmother, from Benfleet, Essex, had to stump up the money to stop the bailiffs entering the home to take goods.
The grandmother, who asked not to be named, said: “My son rang me in a state of panic and I in turn rang the bailiff who informed me that if the eye-watering fine of £1,230 wasn’t paid immediately they would force entry and remove goods to the value.
“These goods would then be auctioned and all charges would be added to the bill, making an estimated total of £3,500, while inability to pay would have automatically incurred a three month custodial sentence for both parents.
“He’s a bright boy, my grandson, and he could easily hack five days off. I know it was wrong to take him out of school, but I thought the punishment was completely out of proportion – I thought it was a bit Stasi and Big Brother.”
Would you like to see this sort of checks in your own country?
