Grand Mother Celebrates Learning To Read And Write At 100
A grandmother has shown age is not a barrier to learning as she has celebrated been able to read and write at the ripe old age of 100.
The Mirror reports:
Zhao Shun has been celebrating getting her Literacy Certificate which proves that she’s passed the tests signifying literacy in Sanbao community, Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang province.
Although she was never sent to school, Zhao always wanted to learn the basic skills, being able only to read her own name.
She recently decided that she wanted to take the plunge, attending two hours of classes every day, and within 10 days, she had learned more than 100 characters, including her address and some foods, according to People.cn.
Zhao used to sell vegetables when she worked, but she’s long since retired. Her eldest son, who has a Bachelor’s Degree, said: “Mum knows how hard life can be when you are illiterate, that’s why she insisted that we should get our education despite the economic deficiency in our family.”
Official figures show that adult literacy among women in China is at 92.7 per cent, compared to 99 per cent in the UK.
