9 Reasons Why a Woman’s Pee Smells Weird
Every woman tends to be extremely cautious and careful when it comes to all activities “down there.”
Most times, we may not bother to notice the smell of the pee we pass out. It is scary when you go to the toilet, and you are met with a surprise.
Most common causes of smelly urine are totally harmless and a few are more concerning. Read on to find out what your vagina is trying to tell you.
Harmless reasons:
1) You are ovulating
In this case, the smell of your urine isn’t changing per-say, your ability to smell the ammonia present in your urine has been amped up due to the hormones that your body produces (estrogen and progesterone) when you are ovulating. According to a study by Biological Psychology, it means your sense of smell has just been heightened during this period.
2) You are pregnant
The hormone mentioned earlier, (estrogen and progesterone), also causes one to pee every five minutes.
Urine can have a more pungent smell from the hormones produced during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.
3) You are dehydrated
Not drinking enough water can cause your pee to smell very badly. When your body is dehydrated, the urine will have a strong odor and appears dark in color. It’s your body’s way of telling you to re-hydrate. Always drink water as often as possible.
4) You ate something
According to the British Medical Journal, certain foods can change the smell of your urine. Certain foods like onions, some spices, garlic, curry, alcohol, and even coffee can change the smell. Salty food can also make your urine more pungent than what it used to be.
5) You have yeast infection
Yeast infections cause itching, burning, discharge and a yucky smell. The yeast infection occurs in your vagina but your urine picks up this smell because your urethra is so close to your vagina. If you find your self in this position, (distinctive itching and burning down there) see a gynecologist, it can be very embarrassing and uncomfortable.
Harmful Reasons
6) You have UTI (urinary tract infection)
This is by far the most common medical reason, why women have smelly urine. The bacteria causing the infection also produces the odor, in addition to making your urine appear cloudy or bloody and giving you the feeling like you have to pee, but noting comes out. If you suspect a UTI, talk to your doctor immediately so you can get started on an antibiotic.
7) You might have Diabetes
The first detection of Diabetes or high blood sugar is sugary-smelly pee. This happens because of the extra sugar your kidney pumps out. You may want to get your blood sugar checked if you find out your pee smells ‘sweet’ and you always urinate too often.
8) You still Douche
Douching is when you use certain soaps or washes to clean out your vagina. This is a practice that medical experts have warned against because it affects the pH balance in the vagina, causing a stinky imbalance or infection. As stated earlier, your pee can be masked with the smell of an imbalanced pH cycle, because the urethra and vagina are placed closely together.
9) You may have an STD (sexually transmitted disease)
Some STDs, such as Chlamydia is the most common culprit of smelly pee when STD’s are involved. It is advisable to get checked immediately if you suspect that you have one, you don’t have to wait for your urine to smell before you do.
Please remember, that once you suspect any foul play or smell down there, check in immediately with a doctor, as it is impossible to determine which is harmless and which isn’t.
