Was She Wrong? Ciara Faces Backlash for Telling Single Women to ‘Level up’
Ciara, the multi-talented megastar is in deep waters for telling single women to “level up.” She said this in support of a sermon preached by a certain Pastor who told single women that the reason they are not married is because they are walking in the spirit of “girlfriend”.
The video that Ciara shared shows Pastor John Gray giving a sermon in front of a large audience when he says:
‘You are not a wife when I marry you, you are a wife when I find you. You become my wife when I marry you. But a wife’s not the presence of a ring, it is the presence of your character.
‘Too many women want to be married, but you are walking in the spirit of a girlfriend,’ the pastor preached.
The mother-of-two, who is happily married to Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, then wrote a caption of her on, telling women to ‘#LevelUp. Don’t Settle’.

The controversial post quickly drew attention from several folks on social media who accused the singer of shaming single women.
A lot of people felt it was condescending and a way of letting single women feel they are inferior to married women and it’s their fault they can’t get a husband.

Some said Ciara had a point seeing that she is now in a loving marriage. While others reminded her that she also was in the position of the single women she is now referring to and even had some bad relationships prior to meeting Russell.
Cici Adams, a reporter at People was one of those who called Ciara out on her post. Cici also criticized John Gray’s preaching as a whole and said women are constantly told to be a certain way to attract a husband, whereas, no one ever tells men how to behave to attract a wife.
“Ciara telling women to “Level up” and live “like a wife” so they can b married is astounding to me. Didn’t you need grace, mercy & compassion when you were being dragged up and down the Internet for the Future situation? How quickly people forget when they reach a perch of privilege,” Cici tweeted.

Other social media users slammed Ciara for having a kid with Future despite the fact that they did not tie the knot.
‘#Ciara You weren’t “walking in the spirit” when you got pregnant with Future’s son OUT OF WEDLOCK. Now run & tell that!’ one user tweeted.
‘You have two kids by two different men. Sit this one out Ciara,’ another said.
And despite the backlash, there were twice as many folks who had Ciara’s back.

Following the backlash, the songstress posted an update explaining what she meant.
‘I was once that girl wanting to be loved a certain way but was making the wrong choices. I found myself at my lowest moment.
‘I was a single mom sitting at home, and I then realized that the perfect love I was looking for was how God loves me, how He wants me to be loved, and who He was calling me to be as a mom and a woman.
‘That’s when I realized married or not married… I needed to love myself. #LevelUp.’
