OAP, Toke Makinwa Shares Practical Steps She Is Taking To Heal From PTSD
OAP Toke Makinwa is speaking up about her struggle with mental health. In a post shared to her Instagram, the 35-year-old disclosed that she has been struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sharing in the process, the exact steps she has been taking so she can better confront her emotional challenges.
The entrepreneur shared her story in reaction to media mogul Oprah Winfrey revealing that she was not accepted as a child because of her skin colour and looks.
Makinwa shared a video of Oprah Winfrey addressing her tense relationship with her mother and how she struggled in other respects as a child; it was in reaction to that that Toke explained that her journey to healing from her own emotional struggles have required therapy.
She recommended forgiveness, although she admits its difficult; practicing forgiveness alongside going through therapy has put her in better capacity to overcome her struggle with PTSD, she shared.
She wrote:
“We are all broke different, Therapy saved me. I’m not a hundred percent, but I can say that going to therapy has really helped.
One day I hope I’m brave enough to share my journey to healing fro PSTD through therapy.
Forgive some today, I know it’s difficult but life is short. And just like Oprah played music and family thanked her, mum, I pray you all get the courage to go to those dark places and come out in the light. Love you all – TM”.
