South African Woman, Jabulile, Receives Pleasant Surprise in Delivery Room
A 30-year-old pregnant woman, Jabulile got the shock of her life after going into labour. According to her, she was unaware that she was pregnant with quadruplet as she expected to birth just one baby.
Jabulile Sangweni delivered not one baby, but quadruplets without complication; three girls and one boy at Vryheid hospital, in Johannesburg, South Africa with only a nurse to assist her.
“I honestly didn’t know I was carrying four babies. I was surprised when the nurses told me I was carrying more than one child. I was really not expecting it. I didn’t know what to say. I was shocked, but I’m excited now.”
Sangweni was brought in by an ambulance from home on Thursday morning at 07:30, August 31 with labour pains. She had been attending ante-natal classes at eDumbe mobile clinic.
The first baby was male and was delivered at 08:00, weighing 1,37kg. The second baby was delivered at 08:05, weighing 880g. The third baby was birthed at 08:10, weighing 940g and the little girl was delivered at 08:25, weighing 1,1kg.

According to enCAreports, the professional nurse, Simphiwe Nomali Buthelezi, who helped her deliver her babies said when she arrived the ward and checked Jabulile she discovered she had more than one babies in her.
“ When I arrived in the ward, we examined the mother and discovered that indeed there might be more than one baby in her. We then helped her deliver the second baby.
We were quite surprised to learn that there was a third baby still coming. We then helped her deliver once more.

Now, according to our training, triplets are far more common than quadruplets, so it would have been easy to assume that the third baby was the last and that she had had triplets. But when we checked, we discovered a fourth baby. We were truly, truly surprised.”
The mother of four is said to be recovering well and her four babies are receiving medical attention from the Vryheid Hospital medical team.
KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said it was a miracle that the birth of the quadruplets in a district hospital was well-managed without any complications.
