See How Woman Used Her Unborn Child To Scam And Steal From People
A heavily pregnant woman who pretended to be collecting money for charity was yesterday jailed for six years for a series of distraction burglaries.
According to the Mirror, Kayleigh Mitchell admitted a string of burglaries and frauds relating to doorstepping elderly people, scamming them out of cash and raiding their homes.
The 25-year-old targeted homes around Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex and Wiltshire, a court heard, using her pregnancy to win around her victims. She pretended to be collecting money for a variety of charities but instead pocketed the cash herself. If people let Mitchell into their homes she would also steal valuables from their homes. The fraudster, of Croydon Close, Southampton, was handed a six year prison term at Southampton Crown Court yesterday. She had pleaded guilty to eight burglaries and four frauds and a further three burglaries and nine frauds were taken into consideration.
Detective Inspector Steve Deeprose, from Hampshire Police, said he welcomed the sentence which he hoped would send a “clear message” to anyone tempted to commit this type of crime. Mitchell was targeting vulnerable and elderly people by pretending to be collecting for charities,” he said. “She was heavily pregnant at the time and used this to her advantage. She persuaded her victims to part with cash claiming it was for a variety of charities and if she managed to get beyond the doorstep she would go on to distract her victims and steal valuables from their homes.
“In one case she took jewellery and a handbag from an elderly lady. On other occasions she took cash. Mitchell was identified through the descriptions that her victims offered and by taking full advantage of all forensic opportunities. Mitchell’s victims will no doubt also have been given the closure that they need, now that she has received a six year sentence.”
Mitchell was jailed for six years in prison for the burglaries and two years for the frauds, to run concurrently. The court heard how she had targeted families in the Southampton, Waterlooville and Ringwood areas of Hampshire, as well as three other counties.
