What A Married Rugby Player and Dad-of-two Reveals He’s Gay

27 year-old sports man has revealed the moment he told his wife why they could no longer be together. Keegan Hirst said the relief of finally coming out felt like ‘letting out a long breath that I’ve held in for a long time’.

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Mirror, the dad of two tells of the moment he finally found the words to explain to his wife the reason they could no longer be together. The father-of-two said he felt like he was too ‘macho’ to be gay, but came to realise that he had been attracted to men since he was 15.

Hirst said: ‘She blamed herself when we ­separated but I knew she’d done nothing wrong. I couldn’t bear it any more, the guilt of it all, of her not knowing why I left. It was eating me up.
‘She didn’t say anything at first. I explained why and how I felt, it was very emotional. We were both in tears.
‘It was incredibly tough, but for me it was a weird situation because it also felt liberating.’

The parents have told their children, aged seven and two, that they have split up but have not explained the full reasons why as of yet.

Hirst, who plays as a prop for the second-tier outfit, explained that he has had girlfriends since he was a teenager but began to interested in men when he was 15 years old.

Growing up on a council estate and quitting sixth form to pursue his rugby league career, he says he was ‘in denial’ about his homosexuality, convincing himself that deep down he was straight. The toll of keeping such a huge secret about his private life led to Hirst, who insists he loved his wife and never cheated on her, considering taking his own life.

His first match as an openly gay player comes today when he faces local rivals Dewsbury. He is aware he could face abusive chants from some fans but says he will brush it off.

‘I’m comfortable in my own skin, probably for the first time ever,’ he said.
