Sitting-Up: How To Encourage Your Baby To Sit Up Independently

Being able to sit-up is one of those early milestones parents look out for in their babies’ third or fourth month. Learning to sit gives your baby a cutting edge view of the world around him.

But before your baby can start learning how to sit, other skills such as good head control, ability to place arms on the ground have to be first acquired. You can thereafter proceed to help your baby learn to sit up using these practical tips:

  1. Allow your baby topple over: You impulsively reach out to catch your baby when she topples over after placing her to sit up, but you shouldn’t do this too much. Allowing your baby tip over will make her learn to use her muscles or arms to prevent her from falling. This comes with practice. To keep your baby safe, place a bobby pillow or well padded blankets around your baby to cushion her fall. Sitting Up
  2. Use a sizeable box: To stimulate those muscles required to help your baby sit up, place your baby in a sizeable cardboard or plastic box. Support with pillows if required and give her some toys to play with. sitting up1
  3. Place baby between your legs: Sit on the floor and place your baby in between your thighs with his back up against you. Place a bunch of toys or any safe object that is sure to catch your baby’s fancy for your baby to play with.

Note: By six months, your baby should be able to sit well without support but don’t try to rush the process as this could have an adverse effect on your baby and you do not want that. Take baby steps. Start with a few seconds each day and gradually progress to leaving your baby to sit-up for longer moments.  All the best!
