7 Things To Avoid During Pregnancy

What’s safe, what’s not safe? These are the thoughts that plague your mind once you discover that you are pregnant. It’s not rocket science to know you should avoid climbing a ladder when pregnant because you are now prone to injury. .However, there are some grey areas you might not even be aware of.

Below is small list of activities you absolutely need to avoid when you are pregnant….

  • Gel coated nail polish

Occasionally, you might want indulge in a little manicure. That isn’t even bad in itself, but one must remember to stay clear of gel nail polishes. Why? Because the compounds in the gel formulas are potentially toxic to you and your baby, says Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, M.D, a dermatologist in New York City explains. Gel polishes won’t seep through the nail itself, but could be absorbed through your nail bed, and the ultra violet rays used to make are dangerous to both mother and child.

  • Amusement park rides

Water-slides and other rides at amusement parks are a no-no, since a forceful landing or sudden start or stop could harm you or your baby.

  • Long distance running

Pregnancy isn’t the time to start a marathon race all in the aim of keeping fit, even if it is important to keep fit all during this time. Long distance running isn’t advisable, except you have been doing this way before you got pregnant. It would be wise to proceed with caution.

  • Bikini waxes

Blood flow to the skin during pregnancy is increased, especially in the pubic are, so one will probably be more sensitive to tugging, or shaving. The best thing to do is to just trim and avoid waxing or shaving at all.

  • Teeth whitening products

Elisa Mello, D.D.S. a cosmetic and reconstructive dentist says that the chemicals created during the procedure can corrode tissue cells, and it is not known what damage they may do to a developing baby if it is swallowed accidentally.

  • Insect repellents

Insecticides, locally referred to as ‘fleet’ contain high levels of toxic contents that can be harmful to a pregnant woman and her unborn child when inhaled. Delegate the fumigation to someone else and steer clear recently fumigated areas.

  • Sleeping aids

When your sleeping pattern become disrupted, you might be tempted to take sleeping aids, especially when you become insomniac. Just remember that there are sufficient evidences to prove sleeping aids are unsafe during pregnancy.
