Mum Calls The Police On Her Unruly 10-Year-Old Boy
New York Daily – A Georgia mother who called police to stage a mock arrest of her disobedient 10-year-old son is calling it a “tough love” reality check for him that may one day save his life.
“I just wanted to scare him. Not to harm him,” Chiquita Hill, 33, told the Daily News Friday of Tuesday’s call to the Columbus police department. “I want him to understand that there are consequences for his actions.”
The fifth-grader had been talking back to his teacher, mouthing off and “just being rude and disrespectful,” she said.
“I understand he will act out, he’s a pre-teen. He will be going through changes as he gets older, but I want to stop it now before he gets older, like the Baltimore mom. I completely understand what she did. That’s her only son,” the mother of three said.
Hill’s reference is to Toya Graham who also on Tuesday was filmed slapping her 16-year-old son when she caught him joining Baltimore’s violent protests following the death of Freddie Gray.
Hill’s inability to knock some sense into her own son finally led her to call her local police station. Officers there were happy to oblige, she said.
“I talked to the operator; I told her what was going on. When they’re off-duty they come and talk to kids,” she said.
Sean, who will turn 11 this month, initially didn’t believe his mother’s threat. But when an officer arrived at their home, he got what his mother hopes will be the wake-up call of a lifetime. After discussing his bad behavior with officers, they decided he still didn’t comprehend the impact his negative actions could have on his life. So they handcuffed him, walked him out to a police cruiser and put him in the backseat for about five minutes. Little Sean was meanwhile photographed wailing from inside.
“The pictures showed the seriousness of it. Next time it may not be crying. He may be dead,” she said.
Asked if her son’s behavior has changed, she enthusiastically replied, “Oh, dramatically!”
“I’ve been keeping in contact with his teacher and they’ve been giving me reports,” she said.
“Parenting does not come with a manual,” she defended while acknowledging some critics of the staged arrest. “I raised my son the best way I know how so he can be a productive member of society. I want to get him off right before he gets older because I don’t want him to go to jail,” she said.
Speaking of the officers, she said, “They showed him that there are other consequences. I’m very appreciative.”
